Expansion of West Funen High School with an emphasis on establishing spatial variety
Expansion of West Funen High School with new wings for natural science, creative and language subjects, and new classrooms for mandatory subjects. The classrooms are organised around two double-height study squares with a varied environment of project and study workplaces. The project also contains a multi-purpose hall and library facilities.
The project for expanding West Funen High School concentrated on establishing spatial variety to cater for individuality, community, academic focus and intimacy. Social communities are created on the basis of recognising individual differences. Accordingly, the architecture is differentiated in terms of spaces to establish room for a variety of social groups.
In a high school where the academic aspect is top priority, it is crucial for the architecture to reflect this focus. So the project concentrated on establishing learning environments, which are coded specifically for the activities and subjects, for which they form the setting. Intimacy is a feature in several aspects of the project: from the overall principal of organisation to the choice of materials and the inter-relationship of the spaces. Following the expansion, the building volume consists of three structures, which relate to each other like a trefoil. All structures relate to the same centre: a green courtyard, which both connects and divides the three subject areas.
